A scanner is an input device that captures documents such as photographs and text.  Scanners are of many types according to their design, scanning mechanisms etc.  It will take anything that is physically present, such as a paper or a picture, and convert it into a digital form before transferring it to your personal computer.  A scanner is an electrical device that reads and converts documents such as photos and pages of text into a digital signal.
